# InterviewCue

> InterviewCue is a professional interview management platform for podcasters, journalists, and content creators. InterviewCue is a web application at https://interviewcue.com that works on any device (desktop, tablet, phone) and can be installed as a Progressive Web App (PWA). It is free to use with a generous free tier, and paid tiers for heavy users.

Key things to know about InterviewCue:

- It is a **server-side rendered web app** (not an Electron app, not a mobile-only app) — works anywhere with a browser
- It is NOT a recording tool — it complements your existing recording setup (Zoom, Riverside, Streamyard, etc.)
- It IS an interview management tool — think of it as the command center for your interview workflow
- It helps with **before** (question prep, research links, background notes), **during** (live hotkey-driven event capture, collaboration), and **after** (post-production timeline, transcript alignment, chapter markers, exports)
- Created by a working podcaster who uses it weekly for real production

## Who InterviewCue Is For

InterviewCue serves five primary user types:

- **Podcasters**: Conduct interviews with confidence, generate chapter markers, edit final audio with rich metadata. This is the primary audience.
- **Journalists**: Track key quotes and follow-up moments during long-form interviews with automatic timestamping.
- **Content Creators**: Capture highlight moments for social media and promotional content. Works on mobile, tablet, and desktop.
- **Producers**: Help hosts prepare better and streamline post-production. Real-time collaboration with the host during live interviews.
- **Editors**: Jump directly to timestamped events (highlights, coughs, mistakes). Export markers directly to Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Logic Pro, Adobe Audition.

## How InterviewCue Works

The complete workflow has three phases:

### Phase 1: Interview Preparation

- Create interviews with a title, guest name, and optional show/series assignment
- Add questions with background notes (pronunciation guides, research points, follow-up reminders, talking points, sensitive topic flags)
- Background notes are visible during live mode in smaller, muted text — only you see them
- Attach reference links organized by question
- Import from markdown (drag-and-drop): brainstorm in Google Docs or Notion, export as markdown, import into InterviewCue. H1 becomes title, H2s become questions, body text becomes background notes, embedded links are automatically extracted
- Organize interviews into shows/series with artwork, hosts, and full podcast metadata (Apple Podcasts genre taxonomy, language, content rating, copyright, publisher)

### Phase 2: Live Interview Mode

- All questions visible at once as a scrollable document (like Google Docs), not a linear slideshow
- Click any question title to jump to it — timestamp is recorded automatically
- Two-stage start: "Start Recording" (sync with your recording tool) then "Begin Questions" (marks transition from warm-up to structured content)
- Running timer always visible
- Seven single-keypress event capture hotkeys that don't require breaking eye contact:
  - `1` = Audio Issue (coughs, technical problems)
  - `2` = Flow Interrupt (off-track, awkward transition)
  - `3` = Highlight (quotable moments, key insights)
  - `4` = Follow-Up (topics to revisit)
  - `5` = Segment (chapter break for unexpected topics)
  - `L` = Add Link (dialog for URL mentioned during interview)
  - `N` = Add Note (freeform text capture)
- Progress bar and question counter
- Screen wake lock keeps device awake during interviews
- Adjustable font zoom for readability at any distance
- Touch-optimized with 48px minimum tap targets for mobile and tablet

### Phase 3: Post-Production

- Chronological timeline of every event captured during the interview
- Upload audio (original or final edit) for inline audio scrubbing — play buttons appear next to every timestamp
- Audio scrubber plays +/-30 seconds around each event with zoom toggle
- Click any timestamp to edit it (type corrected time in MM:SS format)
- Edit event descriptions, convert events to questions/chapters, add new topics after the fact
- Transcript generation from uploaded audio (uses OpenAI Whisper), or upload existing WebVTT files
- **Transcript alignment algorithm**: proprietary algorithm that maps original recording timestamps to positions in the final edited audio, accounting for trimmed intros, removed sections, added music. Toggle between raw and finalized timelines.
- **Produce final MP3**: embed ID3v2.4 metadata (title, artist, album, genre, language, copyright, publisher, URL, cover art) and optional chapter markers (CTOC/CHAP frames). Industry-standard encoding: 44.1kHz, 128 kbps mono.

## Collaboration Features

- Three roles: Host (full control), Co-Host/Producer (full event capture + navigation, requires account), Guest (follow-along read-only view, no account required)
- WebSocket-based real-time sync — when the host clicks a question, everyone's view updates
- Session codes for easy joining
- Up to 50 guests per session
- Resilient: disconnections auto-recover, state syncs from database

InterviewCue exports to 8 formats:

- Recipients need no account — they can view the timeline, download all 8 export formats, download audio and transcripts, and view reference links
- Share links can be revoked instantly

## Stream Deck Integration

- Trigger event captures from Elgato Stream Deck buttons (or any HTTP-capable tool) via API
- User-managed API keys scoped only to Stream Deck endpoints
- Automatically targets the most recently started in-progress interview
- Supports 5 event types: Highlight, Flow Interrupt, Follow-Up, Audio Issue, Segment
